Public Health Scholarship and Leadership Opportunity for HBCU Graduates

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us that addressing today’s public health challenges requires leaders with bold ideas, diverse perspectives, and a commitment to eliminating the disparities that impact the most vulnerable communities. Greater diversity in the workforce - especially among the ranks of leadership - brings attention to health disparities and can lead to more equitable policies and practices.
To expand the diversity of students entering the Master of Public Health program, the Brown University School of Public Health launched the Health Equity Scholars program, open to qualified graduates of HBCUs. Through mentorship, coaching, and training, the Scholars develop and strengthen the skills they will need to be effective leaders. The Health Equity Scholars program aims to create a broad, interconnected network of transformational leaders who will use their talents to bring greater equity and justice to their public health careers.
For the 2022 academic year, the HES Program is specifically inviting applicants with an interest in public health and a minimum of two years of work experience in any field or industry. The perspective that comes from work experience brings a richness to the classroom that benefits the entire HES cohort. If you are an HBCU graduate who has been wanting to have a greater impact on the well-being of your community, and if you’ve been waiting for the right time to pursue a graduate degree, consider applying for the Health Equity Scholars Program.
Scholars benefit from:
Financial support: Up to full tuition (based on demonstrated need), coverage of fees, and stipend support for a research assistantship.
Hands-on public health training: A required 145-hour internship working with a local, national, or international organization exposes the Scholars to public health practice
Leadership training: Bi-weekly interactive sessions led by Brown University faculty and staff address communication, negotiation, working in teams, crisis management, and other essential leadership skills.
One-to-one coaching: HES students work with a coach to help them define their leadership goals and create a personalized plan for leadership development.
Enhanced mentorship: A team of mentors - drawn from national and international ranks of public health leadership - provide Scholars with guidance and support as they launch their careers.
Networking opportunities: Through lectures, events, and an annual gathering of Scholars and mentors, the HES students deepen their professional connections, creating a network that will support them and help them uplift future leaders.
